LAW Advocates’ Mission: Provide free civil legal assistance to low-income residents of Whatcom County.
LAW Advocates Programs and Outreach Interns assist clients by providing legal resources and support at legal clinics. Community members contact our office seeking legal aid, and interns help direct clients to appropriate services. Interns also support outreach initiatives, educational sessions, and office work, gaining experience in direct client communication, program coordination, administration, data reporting, and collaboration with local legal professionals and partner organizations.
Location: In-person at LAW Advocates office, 1407 Commercial Street, Bellingham, WA.
Hours: 6-15 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends as clinic times vary.
Commitment: Minimum of 6 months
Start Date: Monday June 16th, 2025
Responsible to: Programs Manager
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare for and attend legal clinics, ensuring effective community engagement and outreach. Collaborate with the Intern Cohort on preparations.
- Conduct client intakes via phone and email, highlighting available services.
- Assist with outreach to clients in-person, over the phone, and via email, including distributing informational materials and promoting events.
- Conduct outreach to local organizations and community groups to increase awareness of available legal services and programs.
- Collect all necessary data as required by funders and stakeholders.
- Accurately and efficiently enter intake information into case management software.
- Refer clients to other LAW Advocates programs and community resources as appropriate, fostering partnerships with local organizations.
Qualifications:
- Interest in supporting LAW Advocates’ mission.
- Ability to provide sufficient notice of any upcoming absences.
- Appreciation for the sensitive nature of confidential information, with the ability to maintain privacy for both written and electronic data.
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and maintain positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and clients.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to represent LAW Advocates positively and professionally.
- Basic proficiency in phone, computer, and Microsoft applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Independent worker and good collaborator with sound judgment.
- Spanish, Farsi, Punjabi, or Russian-speaking applicants are encouraged to apply.
