Pro Bono Placement

Our Pro Bono Placement Program offers legal professions the opportunity to contribute to their community by providing much-needed legal services to marginalized members of our community, ensuring that those with limited incomes receive the legal support they need.  Whether you are interested in offering brief consults at Street Law Clinics or taking on full pro bono cases, our program provides various levels of involvement to suit your preferences and schedule.

Level of Service:

  1. Clinics:
    • Offer brief consultations to clients requiring legal assistance.
    • Clients sign a Limited-Service Agreement, acknowledging the consultation’s limited scope to the Street Law session.
  2. Clinic to Pro Bono Transition
    • Transition seamlessly from clinic consultation to undertake pro bono cases.
    • If, during your interaction with a client at our clinic, you identify a pressing need and have capacity to offer further pro bono assistance, we will provide you with a LAW Advocates Attorney-Client Assistance Agreement specifying the level of service you are prepared to extend. LAW Advocates will follow up regarding pro bono hours and the legal support provided.
  3. Pro Bono: Direct Representation
    • Engage directly with clients to assess and determine the level of involvement for their legal issues.
    • Fill out LAW Advocates Attorney-Client Assistance Agreement with the client detailing the agreed-upon level service, and LAW Advocates will follow up regarding pro bono hours and the legal support provided.

Benefits of Participation:

  1. Earn MCLE Credits:  Volunteering with a pro bono organization or Qualified Legal Services Provider
  2. Malpractice Insurance Coverage: LAW Advocates provides malpractice insurance to their legal volunteers.
  3. Retired Professionals: Retired legal professionals can maintain their practice status by transitioning to “pro bono” status for a limited annual license fee to WSBA.
  4. Fulfill Professional Responsibility:  Aspire to meet the recommended 30 hours of pro bono service per year, as outlined in RPC 6.1
  5. Contribution to the Community: Make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need by offering your expertise and support.

Join our Pro Bono Placement Program and become part of a network of legal professionals dedicated to serving the underserved.  Whether you have a few hours to spare or want to commit to ongoing pro bono work, there’s a place for you in our programs.  Together, we can help ensure access to justice for all our community.

"Volunteering at the Debt Collections Clinic allows me to assist clients struggling to understand the often-confusing challenge of the legal ramifications of a debt. Debtor-creditor law was not my primary focus in my career, but the Northwest Justice Project and Law Advocates have information available online and mentors ready to assist. This is rewarding work as it allows people to understand the process and potential options available. The Law Advocates staff is great to work with, and they do a good job of summarizing the person’s situation to allow for a smoother and more efficient process."

“I volunteered at LAW Advocates’ first post-covid legal clinic, and I continue to regularly counsel low-income clients at the library. Helping ordinary people with their concrete legal problems makes me proud to be a lawyer. The LAW Advocates staff and volunteers do an amazing job organizing the clinic and preparing lawyers for their client consultations. I’m fascinated by the legal problems my LAW Advocates clients bring me. They’re very different from my own practice areas, but I can usually find a way to help the client. Last year LAW Advocates teamed up with Northwest Youth Services to create a new program where volunteer lawyers regularly provide legal services at the drop-in facility for unhoused youth. Although they face daunting legal problems, it is immensely rewarding to work with these clients.”

We’re always excited to welcome new volunteer attorneys! You can get started by filling out our Volunteer Registration Form or email us directly at [email protected]. Once we know a bit more about your interests, availability, and practice areas, we’ll help match you with a clinic or program that fits your experience and goals

No. Attorneys volunteer in a variety of ways that fit their capacity. Most of our programs are clinic-based, meaning you provide brief legal advice rather than ongoing representation. We never assign full representation without your express agreement.

It’s completely up to you. Some attorneys volunteer monthly, while others join us for a few clinics each year. Whether you’re looking for a one-time opportunity or a recurring commitment, we’ll work with your schedule.

Volunteering with LAW Advocates lets you make a meaningful local impact for people who would otherwise not have access to legal help. You’ll gain hands-on experience serving community members, deepen your knowledge of civil legal issues, earn MCLE credit, and connect with a supportive, justice-minded
